As a physical therapist, you probably know that a certain amount of stress is part of the job. Keeping your productivity levels high while trying to stay focused might be causing burnout at work. You are not alone. Some degree of exhaustion is common for both new and experienced physical therapists. However, there are measures you can put in place to help you avoid burnout as a physical therapist.

Identify Your Stressors

Successfully beating stress as a physical therapist requires knowing the source of the stress. Consider what situations make you feel tense when you are at work. Are there situations or even patients that might be causing you stress? Is there a new database or app that is giving you problems? Recognizing stress before it takes hold is vital for beating stress. Try to count to ten before you answer difficult people. Consider breathing exercises between patients, and if new software is a problem, give yourself some extra time for computer work.

Do Not be Scared to Ask for Help

A great benefit of being a physical therapist is the opportunity to work alongside other therapists. Keep this knowledge in mind if you find yourself overwhelmed at work. There is an excellent chance that some of your colleagues have experience dealing with situations that are causing you grief. Please do not be reluctant to ask for their help. It might surprise you to discover the useful tips they can offer you.

Take Care of Yourself

It is a paradox that you spend your days helping others mend their bodies while possibly neglecting your own in the process. You must care for yourself so you can provide the most excellent care for your clients. Not sure where to start? Consider short walks around the block. It will clear your mind, and it is an excellent physical activity. You may also consider:

  • Regular exercise
  • A nutritious diet
  • Meditation
  • Yoga

Leave Work at Work

For the sake of your emotional health, it is essential to leave thoughts about work where they belong, which is at work. So, take your off time and spend it on yourself. Staying healthy will help you to avoid becoming burnout and allow you to give your patients your best effort. Exercise provides an ideal way to keep your mind off work when you are away from it. Begin with simple exercises like jumping jacks and push-ups to distract your mind while strengthening your body.
